How Therapy at GPMMC Changed the Way I Handle Stress

I will be upfront — I am not the kind of person who talks about feelings. I work in the oil patch, I have been doing it for fifteen years, and the culture out here is not exactly one where you sit around discussing your mental state. But after a rough stretch that hit my marriage and my sleep and pretty much everything else, I agreed to try seeing Dr. Klein. That was eight months ago.

Why I Was Skeptical

I did not think talking to someone was going to fix anything. I had tried to muscle through the anxiety for a long time and I figured a therapist would just tell me to breathe and write in a journal. I nearly cancelled the first appointment twice.

What actually got me through the door was that this clinic is for men specifically. That made a difference. I did not want to feel like I was out of place or that the approach was built for someone else’s problems.

What CBT Actually Did For Me

Dr. Klein does not just listen. He gives you frameworks, actual tools you can use when things get bad. The cognitive behavioural work was structured and practical, which suited me a lot better than I expected. It felt more like problem-solving than venting.

The shift was gradual. About six weeks in I noticed I was not waking up at 3 a.m. running worst-case scenarios anymore. That alone was worth every session.

Where I Am Now

I am not going to say everything is perfect because that is not how life works. But I have a better grip on what sets me off and how to handle it before it snowballs. My wife noticed before I did.

I still see Dr. Klein periodically. Not because I am in crisis, but because it is maintenance. Same reason I get my truck serviced before it breaks down.
